Traditional karate started in Okinawa among peasant farmers, who were
forbidden to use weapons to protect themselves against bandits and rogue
samurai. Founder Master Gichin Funakoshi's pen name, Shoto, is the root
of the name of Shotokan karate. He is also the inspiration behind our
philosophy for karate as a martial art and only for self-defense. On his
shrine are written the words, in Japanese, "There is no first attack
in karate".
Dojo Kun (Principles of
the karate school)

Be faithful
Endeavor
Respect others
Refrain from violent behavior
